    1. It is very sad to think that there are so many people in America who do not have adequate shelter, food, and other necessities of life. It is even more distressing to think of the children who have to go through that. Being a teacher and seeing what so many children have to deal with makes me appreciate what I have more than ever. I have always thought that being a mother has made me a better teacher because I can truly look at these children as someone's baby. But being a teacher has also made me a better mother because I want to give my daughter every opportunity and I realize how many opportunities there truly are for her.

    2. It is very shocking to see the statistical numbers in this video of how many people are homeless. It encourages me as an educator to make school as much of a home for students as possible. In turn giving the students somewhere to look forward to coming, a "shelter" where they feel comfortable, and a nonjudgemental atmosphere where students can express their thoughts without being ashamed of where they live or the income of their parents. As of last year almost 300 students were considered homeless in Troup County. In my opinion, this video makes you stop and think about how grateful we all should really be for what we have today.

    3. First, I love Phil Collins! What a great song! Second, the contrast between the "feel good" music with the visual images of homelessness in the video is astounding. I remember this video from years ago and recall being moved by emotion then as I am now. I have passed by homeless people in cities and always feel so many emotions at once: guilt, sadness, thankfulness, and a wish that I could make it better for them. This year I taught a couple of students who were homeless, one due to a fire that destroyed his home and everything in it. He was at school promptly the next morning! Classrooms can serve as a refuge for students in need. Teachers can make the environment welcoming and safe and attempt to mitigate some of the circumstances that the students face due to poverty.Oftentimes, students think of us as mother figures!

    4. To someone, today can be just another day whereas today can be another desperate day to someone. They are asking help desperately to others but someone ignores them. They pretend not to hear the voice. There are so many people to ask for help in the world. only 6% of population occupied the wealth in the world and pretty many of population need homes, food and clean water. Like lyrics of the song, let's think twice. Our world can be paradise for you and me. We have powers to help others. I believe we can do something for them. We can make another day in our paradise.

    5. I was very moved by the words and the images in this video. It made me sad to see the children and the sadness in their faces. Three milion homeless in America! Wow, so many children in our own schools are going through this. A lot of children do not know when their next meal will be when they leave schools. I feel a burden like this each year when at least one of my students comes to school in dirty clothes, without snack, and dirty. Poverty is all around us and it was a shock to see the image of the billboard stating not to feed the beggers, it will cause traffic problems. This makes me feel very fortunate and makes me think twice when I see people in need and I am in a rush.

    6. This song addresses how people easily become desensitized by what they see and ignore the suffering right in front of their eyes. I would be lying if I said I had not done the same thing while walking down the street. I feel as if there is nothing I can do to help.
When we, as teachers, see or hear of students going through tough times we must help them out to the best of our ability. When we turn or heads or ignore things in plain view, we are not doing our job.

    7. The statistical data from this video is very shocking. It breaks my heart to know that so many children have to go through this everyday. Due to this, I want to strive extra hard to make my classroom a welcoming environment. For some kids, it will be the place in which they feel the safest.

    8. It is shocking that in a country as wealthy as America so many people are homeless. So many organizations are very concerned with the well-being of people in other countries and do not realize that people in our "backyards" need help also. I am not saying that we should not help other countries, but we should not overlook the people in our own country. What is even more shocking, is the amount of children who are living homeless. How can we take care of these children? How can we as educators help these families?

    9. I was really excited to watch a Phil Collins video! I think Dr. Alexander does a great job of relating our text to technology. The video was very eye opening. With our readings and watching this video, it really makes me feel guilty. I know that there is so much out there that we can and need to do for others, but are not sure how to go about doing it. We avoid situations because they make us feel uncomfortable, we fear the unknown, and our safety. It's devastating to learn that there are a many out there that do not have their basic needs taken care of.

    10. What a horrible part of our society and yet any one of us cold end up there...especially now that we have accumulated very large student loans and work in an industry where it seems okay to reduce pay and benefits but require higher demands. It makes me want to really look further into what my students and their families may need...specifically basic needs.

    11. Makes me so sad! I see students every year who lack very basic needs. It's hard to expect students to succeed when they are battling hunger, homelessness etc. I truly believe it is important to look at every students individual needs in order to have them reach their full potential.

    12. This video was very emotional for me. To see sadness and despair on the faces of the children breaks my heart. Sometimes I am so busy with my own life that I forget that there are people out there that do not have the basic necessities of life such as adequate shelter, food, and clean warm bed. The song states that we should “think twice” when we see homeless people. For so many children the meals they get school at are their only meals. Some children have so much to deal with on a daily basis and as a teacher I will try to help them. I want my classroom to be a safe environment.

    13. Homelessness has been such a problem in the US and especially globally and is continuing to escalate. These kids that are homeless fight for survival every day. In class, I struggle with allowing late students that are on free and reduced meals to bring and finish their breakfast during 1st block. I realize that I need to teach them discipline in getting here on time, but at the same time, i understand that some of them are relying on parents that don't value education to get them to school and may be homeless themselves. This breakfast and lunch may be the only meals they get for the day.

    14. It has been easy to know that poverty exists. It has even been easy for me to know that poverty exists only about a five minute drive from my house. What I have found is more difficult is removing the biases, prejudices, and judgments that I have against people that are of a lower socioeconomic level. The reason that the difficulty of removing these prejudices has to be dealt with becomes apparent if you really want to help people that are in need. How am I supposed to help people that, because of my lack of understanding, I judge harshly and wrongly. Growing in my understanding of the other peoples positions helps me to put to death my wrong judgments and frees me up to give the way I have been given to.

    15. It is difficult to believe that one of the richest nations in the world has so many people living in poverty. What is even harder to believe is that so many children fall victim to the perils of poverty. Like we've all mentioned before, children are the innocent victims of their parent's choices and unfortunately, sometimes this means that they suffer the most. I had a homeless student last year and it broke my heart. Very much like someone else said, he chose to wear name brand clothes rather than less expensive clothes. I couldn't afford to provide clothes for him but I did buy breakfast food and snacks to keep in my classroom. When he asked for food I gave it to him-no questions asked. I felt like this was one way that I could help him and let him know that I was trying to sympathize with his situation.

    16. The data from this video is very shocking, three million homeless people in America! It is heart breaking to drive around and see homeless people. It hurts me because I feel bad because I do have so much and I don’t know how to help. Some of things that I have seen through teaching have really broken me down. To see children come to school who have slept in a car, have not showered or had their clothes cleaned, or who have not eaten since the day before at school. As teacher we do as much as we can but is it enough? How can we help these students and their parents?

    17. The data from this video is very eye opening! This is guch a great song and such a good message. I do need to think twice that today for me might be another day in paradice, but for someone else it is far from. This really helps you see that when a student behaves a certain way that there is something behind that behavior. That student in my class could always seem lazy as if he doens't care, but little do we know, that same child is homeless. This video has also made me look at not only the way I can pass judgement on the students I encounter in the classroom, but also in my everyday walk of life. I too need to think twice and start finding ways to help. Great Video!!

  8. The data in this video is unbelievable and very shocking. As educators it is very important that you create as close to a "home" environment as possible. For some students your classroom may be the closest thing to a home for them. I hope to create a classroom that will act as a safe place for my students. It is important as educators to create a risk-free & comfortable environment for all students because many of your students could very well be homeless.

  9. I didn’t know the big statistics about people homeless and in those situations. I love the singer because he remember me my father, he loves Phil Collins, but when you hear about those statistics numbers, you start to think about what do you have and the others don’t. We have to be more critical and don’t be so selfish and see that outside there are people that need a hand, and help them in our possibilities. Is so sad, that in this time, the government is just focus in conquest more land, be the first country over the planet and they forget the poor people, and this problem is in all the countries.

  10. It is so easy to get wrapped up in our own lives that we don't take the time to remember that there are people out there that are struggling to find their next meal. We worry about what fun things we are going to do on the weekend or we want a new car after a year, yet some people will never know these luxuries. My first year of teaching has exposed me to more underprivileged and homeless people than I have ever been exposed to before. It breaks my heart that the only hot meal or love they may receive is in my classroom. As a teacher we just have to do what we can while we have those precious children with us for 8 hours.

  11. It is just amazing to think that in today's world of technology and industry that there are some many people not only in other parts of the world but here in the United States that are homeless and that live below the poverty line. I am always heartbroken when I see and hear about people especially children suffering. I am also astonished about people's lack of concern about the problem. It is hard to think that some of my students are in this situation and I hope that I am able to help them.

  12. The thing that has jumped out at me the most in the first two classes is while reading the assigned reading in the text book was the charts on pg. 34-35. It blows my mind how many kids in the fourth grade throughout the whole United States read below the national proficency rate. The state with the highest reading proficiency was Vermont, who still had 58.6% of fourth graders reading under the national proficiency, and on the other end of the spectrum 83% of fourth graders in Washington D.C. ca not read at a proficient rate.

  13. Homeless people certainly cause us to experience many emotions. Sadness, guilt and feelings of hopelessness fill our hearts. The number of people who are homeless around the world is staggering. The video contrasted upbeat music with the distressing pictures of sad, lonely people. I am reminded that we have children in our school who are homeless and others who do not have enough food at home. I am reminded to carefully consider these things as I work with children.

  14. The thing that caught my eye the most was the sign in the video that says "Please don’t give to beggars. They cause traffic problems". I feel like this shows the sterotypes that have developed about homeless people. That they did something stupid or are just lazy and that they deserve to be homeless and there is nothing that we can do to help them. But that's not true. many people can't help the fact that they are homeless. We talked in class about how difficult it is to make ends meet even when you're working several jobs. I think the sign also addresses how many people just care about their own needs and don’t care how others suffer so long as they get what they want. People shouldn’t help homeless people because it means that you’ll have to spend 10 extra minutes in traffic. How selfish!

  15. I was also shocked by the number of people living below poverty. The song was fitting. As young adults we all have dreams and we do not know how or have the means to capture our dream.

  16. Parks often attract people. It's common to find churches and other groups passing out sandwiches to feed the homeless population. In Dallas and Philly there are laws targeting the homeless which make it a crime to gather and pass food out in large groups without permits, thus making it near impossible to feed hungry men women and children. If you look at the park benches in downtown LaGrange you will find a bar in the middle of each bench. This prevents people from sleeping on the benches.
We feel sorry for those who are homeless but we don't want to have to bother ourselves with them. I have a good friend who makes it a point to stop and speak to homeless people he passes on the street. He has some incredible stories about the friendships he has formed. Something as simple a handshake and a conversation can give dignity to that person. When I was in college I spent a week living in a women and children's homeless shelter as part of a service opportunity. This was when I first realized that there are homeless children who go to school everyday. This was a powerful video.

  17. Between the video and the book, Nickel and Dimed, I was shocked to see how commonplace homelessness is becoming, especially since times are far more trying than when the video and the book were published. It was shocking to see how many people Barbara worked with who thought nothing of living in a car and all sharing a hotel shower. I know these problems exist, but I have always had the impression that homelessness was rampant among those unwilling or unable to work. To see people that work two and three jobs living in cars was unbelievable.

  18. The data in this video is very shocking. As a teacher, one of the most important thing to do is to be able to relate to your students. Each student has their own problems that they go through at home, as teachers we should take that into consideration when dealing with them.
